The above-mentioned quote was written in the dissent of a famous case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that criminal defendants have a constitutional right to refuse counsel and represent themselves in state criminal proceedings. Faretta v. California, 422 U.S. 806, 852, 95 S. Ct. 2525, 2550, 45 L. Ed. 2d 562 (1975).

The Clarence Thomas and Anthony Weiner Scandal
The New York Times published a damning article last Sunday about the improper and unethical relationship shared by Supreme Court Right-Wing Activist Justice Clarence Thomas with influential Dallas real estate mogul and a major donor to conservative causes, Harlan Crow.
The New York Times notes: “The two men met in the mid-1990s, a few years after Justice Thomas joined the court. Since then, Mr. Crow has done many favors for the justice and his wife, Virginia, helping finance a Savannah library project dedicated to Justice Thomas, presenting him with a Bible that belonged to Frederick Douglass and reportedly providing $500,000 for Ms. Thomas to start a Tea Party-related group.”
Reactions from the Houston Mayoral Candidates
If you were hiding under a rock the last 24 hours or perhaps you were catching up on every movie ever touched by John Hughes then you may have missed history.
The United States Senate unanimously voted with a 68-31 total to confirm the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor and paved the way for her to become the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice of the United States.
Well, I have scoured the Internet as best that I could and have found the following statements from the Mayoral Candidates and Texas State Representative Carol Alvarado.
Texas State Representative Carol Alvarado of District 145 in Houston, Texas and formerly Houston City Councilmember of District I states:
Who Should Replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter?
This should be a no-brainer for President Barack Obama. Before one must entertain who should be replacing Supreme Court Justice David Souter … Obama should reflect on the historical makeup of the Supreme Court in the last 100 years and the potential makeup of American society in the next 30 years.
In the history of the Supreme Court:
Worst Case Scenario!

As I have pointed out, the Supreme Court is entertaining the idea about hearing a lawsuit that challenges Barack Obama’s eligibility for being President. The little known fact that the media forgets to add is that John McCain is included in the lawsuit and his eligibility is also being questioned.
Here is the worst case scenario … if the Supreme Court decides to hear the case and hypothetically … they conclude that both Obama and McCain are not eligible to be the President, what happens?
Supreme Court will Review Obama’s Citizenship
Sometimes conservatives do not know when to stop. Take for example the Barack Obama citizenship issue.
Even after Politifact, Snopes and FactCheck confirmed that Obama was born in Hawaii and that his birth certificate checked in, they are not content. Alan Keyes has filed suit to halt California from giving their electoral votes to Obama. Even though this was turned down, it did not stop some other lunatic from attempting the stunt.

Justices Let Stand Ruling on Illegal F.B.I. Search – The Supreme Court on Monday let stand a lower court ruling that the F.B.I. went too far in searching the office of Representative William J. Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat accused of using his position to promote business deals in Africa.
Sources: Iran helped prod al-Sadr cease-fire – Iran was integral in persuading Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to halt attacks by his militia on Iraqi security forces, an Iraqi lawmaker said Monday. Haidar al-Abadi, who is with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s Dawa Party, said Iraqi Shiite lawmakers traveled Friday to Iran to meet with al-Sadr. They returned Sunday, the day al-Sadr told his Mehdi Army fighters to stand down.
US plans finance system overhaul – The US Treasury has revealed its blueprint for the biggest overhaul of regulation of the financial sector since the 1930s. Critics have said that the credit crunch and resultant market turmoil made a strong case for change. But Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson rejected claims that existing regulations have led to the turmoil. And he said the plan should not be implemented until current difficulties roiling financial markets are resolved.
Cubans can now stay in hotels for foreigners – New President Raúl Castro’s government has lifted a ban on Cubans staying at hotels previously reserved for foreigners, ending another restriction that had been especially irksome to ordinary citizens. Some hotels scheduled meetings with all staff members to discuss the changes, and officials said new rules also will allow Cubans to rent cars at state-run agencies for the first time.
