The Shake-Down

The Shake-Down by Art Young

This political cartoon was created over 90 years ago by Art Young.  It is quite fitting that the message still resonates to this day.

Notice that the elephant which represents the "Republican Party" is taking "the People’s" money "for the benefit of Big Business." It is ironic that the current Republican House is determined to "cut spending" this session. I wonder why they are fighting tooth and nail for tax cuts for the rich … perhaps one should look at who is benefiting from the GOP’s actions.

As Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr once eloquently stated, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

The War Within!

There is a fight in Capitol Hill and it is not between Democrats and Republicans. Surprised? Do not be. This is the classic outcome when a party regains power and different factions within the party claim credit for the win.

Currently, the fight is between Old School Democrats versus New School Democrats. The Old School Democrats have been fighting the Republicans since Ronald Reagan and momentarily achieved success during the Clinton years but once W descended upon Washington, their clout diminished. These Democrats feel that seniority and loyalty to the party warrants them privilege and access to the higher echelons of the government.

On the Joe Lieberman Acquittal

If I were not rational, pragmatic or relied on emotions … I would probably call for Joe Lieberman’s blood. “Feed him to the wolves,” I would proclaim but at the end of the day that is not how it occurred or did it?

Senate Democrats secretly voted to decide the fate of Lieberman and nothing happened. Surprising? Not really and here is why.

First, we need to know what got Lieberman into this mess. Well that is quite elementary you see; Lieberman’s role in the John McCain camp was disrespectful, dishonorable and cutthroat.

Not only did he campaign for John McCain, he spoke at the Republican Convention where he served as a surrogate for the McCain camp. He danced to the tune of the GOP and helped spread a message of hate and lies abut the Barack Obama campaign.

Blue Balled

I only Sleep with Democrats by TruthThroughAction.org is probably the most creative and clever marketing strategy I have seen in a while. Their debut short movie is titled Blue Balled and follows a young couple that meet in a bar. The ending may be spoiled by the title but it is nonetheless well executed.

TruthThroughAction.org brings independent filmmakers together to create edgy online film and video content to support the Democratic Party, its issues and candidates. By developing, funding, producing and distributing these high-quality projects, we’re working to ensure they win large, viral Internet audiences.

Turning Texas Blue

I am a native Texan and as long as I can remember, Texas has been red … at times deep purple when President Bush was on the ballot. It looks like times may be a changing.

I have entertained this concept in several posts before. I recommend checking out “Why Texas will Lean Left, Examining How Texas Voted or A Bluer America?” for my input on the idea.

A Bluer America?

For the first time in 8 years, the United States leaned to the Democrats in a decisive fashion. Concerns of a one party rule did not deter Americans from giving Democrats power in the House, Senate and Executive branch.

Although Barack Obama did not have an Electoral Landslide it was still an impressive win … perhaps more like an Electoral Mudslide. After crunching the numbers and reviewing the way Americans voted there was an overwhelming shift and it was blue.

The New York Times released an interactive map that compares the 2008 election to the one in 2004 and one stark difference is how blue America has become.

Revisiting my Predictions of the Election

How did I do with my predictions? Not too bad … I speculated that the Election would be over by 11 EST/10 CST and I was right. When I heard the crowds cheering and boasting that Barack Obama had become our next President … I quickly whipped out my iPhone to confirm the time and it was 10 on the dot. This also implies that my prediction that Obama would win was correct.

Now on the other races, I came close. For example: I thought the Electoral vote would be 352 for Obama and 186 for McCain. It looks more like Obama won 364 and McCain 173. I was wrong about the path that Obama would take in winning this election.
