Block Walk for Peter Brown
Have any plans for this Saturday morning … well if you feel like community organizing, then you may be interested in joining the Peter Brown campaign as he kicks off August with a Block Walk.
Peter Brown’s Campaign states:
“Please join us in kicking off the first block walk of the campaign season. Councilmember Peter Brown and our grassroots supporters will meet at several block walk starting locations to begin the campaign’s neighborhood by neighborhood effort to make Houston even better. Cold drinks and snacks will be provided while you are trained in the art of block walking. See the list below to find the meeting location that is closest to you. Thank you for all of your support and we look forward to seeing you on August 1st!
The Peter Brown for Mayor Field Team
P.S. – After you turn in your block walking packets, you can head to Memorial Park for a thank you BBQ. We will be meeting near the softball fields off Memorial Drive. Food and drinks will be provided.”
It is the neighborhoods that the block walks will occur in that caught my attention.
- Moody Park – 3725 Fulton Street, Northside Village Area 10 AM
- Sylvester Turner Park – 2800 West Little York, Acres Home Area 9:30 AM
- Parker Elementary School – 5600 Willowbend , Westbury/Meyerland Area 9:30 AM
- Memorial Park Softball Field Parking Lot, Memorial/Washington Ave Area 10 AM
- MacGregor Park – 5225 Calhoun Rd, MacGregor Area 9:30 AM
Other than the Memorial Park location, which will also be the rallying point for complimentary barbeque … most of the neighborhoods are in predominantly African-American communities.
Is it no surprise that earlier this week, Brown garnered the support from local African-American Ministers and now he is implementing a blitzkrieg strategy to dampen Gene Locke’s base in strategic areas.
Kudos to the Brown campaign for getting the grassroots movement going and seeking the vote from all citizens of Houston regardless of their background.
I will note that Annise Parker held a Block Walk last week and unfortunately I was not able to attend. Parker targeted “precincts in the Heights and Montrose” last Saturday, July 25. Gene Locke is also organizing his own supporters for a Block Walk but has not promoted it as well as I would expect.
