Packing Heat at University is a No Go

I wrote my original opinions, “Pack Heat While Getting Your Learn On,” to this bill proposed by Republican State Senator, Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio. I am happy to say that this bill did not mature into a law.

The Brady Campaign adds:
“Students don’t want guns on campus, but the National Rifle Association tried to push it,” said John Woods, a student at the University of Texas who led student opposition to the guns on campus bill. “In the process, the gun lobby showed its true colors and produced a new generation of activists inclined to doubt the NRA’s claims that more guns means greater safety. The NRA could have spent its political capital pushing for improved background checks, but instead it got in a shoot-out with university communities all over Texas.”

Well said … as a young adult that plans on returning to a University in Texas to pursue a Juris Doctor … I would not feel safer if anyone could carry a concealed weapon. As a gun owner I would not feel compelled to take the steps in order to carry a firearm every time I would go to class.

On a similar note, SB 730 … a bill that would have allowed gun owners to store guns in cars in company parking lots even if the business prohibits it failed to pass. Thank goodness that the Texas State Legislature did not submit to the demands of the NRA and gun lobby.

Make that: 1 for Gun-Control Activists – 0 for Gun Rights Advocates
