The Impact of the Powell Endorsement

Colin Powell must hate America. He has to be a closet liberal or perhaps Muslim. What else can explain why he decided to endorse Barack Obama today?

Colin Powell’s endorsement speaks volumes and shatters any hopes that John McCain has of defeating Barack Obama, fairly.

In February, Powell told Wolf Blitzer that he would “vote for the candidate I think can do the best job for America.”

He cited Obama’s "ability to inspire" and the "inclusive nature of his campaign" as reasons for voting for Obama. Powell also noted that John McCain’s recent campaign tactics and his pick of Governor Sarah Palin impacted his decision.

But, what does this mean?

Powell’s endorsement is important and will impact this race more than any other endorsement that can occur.

Colin Powell is retired U.S. general and a Republican. He was the Secretary of State during President Bush’s first term. Powell also enjoys an 80% approval rating according to Gallup. In other words, this a qualified individual that crossed party lines to publicly endorse Barack Obama.

Obama did not need Powell’s endorsement but it sure helps. It legitimizes his campaign and addresses any qualms that undecided voters may have had.

McCain’s attacks that Obama does not get it when it comes to the Iraq War or Foreign policy now falls on deaf ears with Powell’s endorsement.

McCain’s claims that Obama pals with a domestic terrorist are irrelevant when a 4-star general, former Secretary of State and United States National Security Advisor endorses him.

Republicans aggressive attacks of labeling Obama as anti-American or Muslim seem moot when a highly decorated, well respected Republican sides with Obama.

But, will it matter?

It sure will but expect the right wing to spin this as fast as possible. Possible talking points will attempt to invalidate Powell’s value. They will claim that voting for Obama is not the same as campaigning. They will try to change the subject as fast as possible in other words.

No matter what they do though … the damage has been done and I cannot foresee any possible way that John McCain can legitimately win this election now.
