The Voter Fraud that does not Exist

Remember the GOP tactic used to attack the media before they could interview Sarah Palin? The talking point was along the lines that the media was bias … bias for doing their job in vetting Sarah Palin’s qualifications and having the audacity to entertain the possibility that she was not ready to lead our nation.

Well their new strategy is to claim that Obama has stolen the election. Say what?

Brad Friedman states it best, “If you can't win it, steal it. If you can't steal it, claim the other guy stole it. If you can't claim the other guy stole it (yet), say they're about to and then kick up smoke that maybe someone will believe you.”

It seems like it has worked since all the networks are reporting the “voter fraud” instigated by that “left-wing” group called Acorn.

Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now, or Acorn, is responsible for registering voters … mostly in low-income (typically Democratic-leaning) areas. That’s it, which is all they do. They just register people.

Where is this voter fraud you make ask? Well, they pay individuals to register people and it seems that some of those individuals have signed up fictitious, dead or already registered people.

It is not voter fraud since those voters cannot vote anyways. Brad Friedman has a great article in The Guardian on the matter. He claims:

“Acorn verifies the legitimacy of every registration its canvassers collect. If they can't authenticate the registration, or it's incomplete or questionable in other ways, they flag that form as problematic ("fraudulent", "incomplete", et cetera). They then hand in all registration forms, even the problematic ones, to elections officials, as they are required to do by law. In almost every case where you've heard about fraud by Acorn, it's because Acorn itself notified officials about the fraud that's been perpetrated on them by rogue canvassers. Most officials who run to the media screaming "Acorn is committing fraud" know all of the above but don't bother to share those facts with the media they've run to. None of this is about voter fraud. None of it. Where any fraud has occurred, it's voter registration fraud and has resulted in exactly zero fraudulent votes.”

Although, Donald Duck may have registered to vote in this election, he will not be able to vote since no one will be able to usurp his identity without first providing the proper government identification.

Instead of attempting to distract the voters and the nation with this phony case of “voter fraud” the John McCain camp and GOP have a great opportunity to introduce legislation that can counter this scenario again.

Instead of asking whether third party organizations are committing fraud when registering potential voters … they should be asking why is it that third parties and not government entities are registering potential voters?

Do you get your passport from a third party? No, you obtain it from the government. The same goes for your driver’s license and anything or everything under the sun as well.

The government should be handling the whole process to avoid the controversy that is plaguing Acorn in the future. It should be the government’s duty to register individuals, not the job of community groups.

Then again, bringing valuable political discourse has never been a quality that the GOP has ever brought to the table.
